Thought process on teaching private lessons

Thought Process on Teaching Private LessonsThe goal is simple. It involves two primary parts. The first is to clearly establish with the student what they want to accomplish in the session, and then help them achieve that goal to the best degree possible in the time frame available.

Now of those two parts, the second tends to be one that can be just a tad more difficult. So how do I address it?

First of all, I’ve found that breaking down technique into two foundational elements improved my own ability to learn as well as teach. Those elements are the concepts for why a technique works and the movements for making it work. Now one of those elements can be applied instantly, and the other one is not quite so easy.

So we have a simple equation. To learn a new technique or improve one already known, you have to learn a new concept, movement, or both. All of the components of the equation aren’t equal though, learning a new concept and applying it to a movement that you can already perform well is clearly the quickest method of learning new technique.

It would be more difficult to flip that around and focus on learning a completely new movement. For example, if someone wanted to learn some offensive options from Tornado Guard or Inverted Guard but they couldn’t do a granby roll, that would be significantly more difficult than if they could do the roll.

Personally, there have been many times when I’ve been in class and I’ve learned a new concept that just clicked for me because I was able to apply it instantly. It’s those moments that led to significantly boosts in my skill.

So when a private is taught, you want to give that same experience because you only have a short time to give the most benefit possible.

Vince Quitugua’s Lost Techniques Of The Half Guard

Cover Art for the Lost Techniques of the Half Guard

I first studied this instructional a few years ago, and the only things that stuck with me were the London and Golden Gate sweeps in their basic forms. Now that I have more knowledge to associate with the material,  I can appreciate how much more great technique is available on the Lost Techniques.

The instructional begins with interviews by Vince Quitugua and Mauricio Mariano on how Vince’s half guard developed. Then it moves on to actual instruction, which is pretty straightforward, but there is a lot of time spent demonstrating technique and explaining the concepts behind them.

In fact,  the best part of the instruction method can be found in the level of focus on situations. For example,  he spends a good amount of time showing adjustments that can be made to the London and Golden Gate sweeps to make them work against a opponent’s common reactions.

Meaningful Quotes

Updated: March 18th, 2016

Take a moment and pick at least one quote. Then ask yourself does it have relevance to you.

That exercise is one that I make an effort to do as well because it is better to learn from history than experience. It can save you time and pain, and that’s why I am thankful to Evolve Academy for including quotes in every newsletter they sent out.

In fact, I’ve pulled every last quote here from those newsletters so that they always can be found easily.

I’m sharing them with you now, and if just one benefits you, it is a success.

Paragon BJJ: secrets of our success instructional review

Secrets of Our Success is unique in that it is like a collection of mini instructionals instead of just one. When you watch it, you get a lot of different perspectives on one DVD.

Now since each of the Paragon elite are showing their favorite techniques, it can seem a little disorganized. Just understand that the main benefit of watching this instructional is to introduce yourself to a wider range of possibilities rather than to work on a specific position.

There is however a area where organization does come into play, and it can be found in the presentation. The menu system on the set is well developed, and it is quite easy to find and review specific techniques with ease.

Also all the instruction follows a similar pattern. They begin with a demonstration, followed by a explanation with demonstration, and then finish with a slow motion demonstration. The one small exception to this is in Aurelio Gallegos Jr’s section, where he does the first demonstration against some resistance.

In addition to the main course, so to speak, there are some interviews with most of the Paragon members on the set, and those were actually quite interesting. Then there are some bonus techniques shown by Bill Cooper and Jeff Glover, as well some bloopers from the production.

Now some time has past since this set was made, but I couldn’t find any techniques on it that weren’t still relevant.

Royler Gracie’s competition tested techniques set

Royler Gracie Instructional

Competition tested techniques is like no other instructional that I have ever seen. I say that not because of the techniques, which are undeniably great, but because of the format, which is quite unique.

First of all, every technique demonstrated is preceded by footage of Royler Gracie applying the technique or close to it in competition. So you can see each technique applied with or without resistance.

The next element of uniqueness is that Royler Gracie doesn’t spend any time explaining the techniques himself. Instead he focuses only on demonstrating each technique over and over again from multiple angles while the explanation is done by voice-over.

Another feature of this set can be found in the summary that concludes each instructional video. In that section, each technique is demonstrated again in order, which gives a quick reference tool for the whole video.

Then there are also the bonus videos, which are quite interesting to watch, and mini documentaries at the start of each instructional about Royler Gracie and his life.

Bonuses

Disc 1: Throws and Sweeps

A series of clips are shown of a Gracie Humaita class where and Royler Gracie are teaching class. You not only get the chance to see how they taught some technique, but also you get to see several black belts rolling.

Disc 2: Guard and Half-Guard Passes

Here you’ll see a one-on-one training session between Royler Gracie and Wellington “Megaton” Dias. They work a series of drills together and then roll for a good period. At points you’ll see Royler attempt or apply some techniques shown in the instructional set.

Disc 3: Mount and Back Positions

In this bonus, Royler is demonstrating Brazilian Jiu-jitsu self defense techniques with one of his daughters.

Disc 4: Submissions

Once again, a Gracie Humaita class is shown, but this time Rolker Gracie is teaching and Royler is just participating.  Some techniques are shown, but again, the gem is seeing Royler Gracie rolling and attempting techniques that were shown on the instructional on other black belts.

Overall, it’s just a really unique presentation method for a instructional, and it would be quite interesting if more of them were made similar to this.
